Summer Fun Awaits

Horizons of Kent and Queen Anne’s strives to make the summer program engaging and we choose a new theme every summer. All activities are curated to build confidence, overcome fears

and align with the theme. We maintain and forge new relationships with local nonprofits, businesses and individuals in the community that enhance

the enrichment activities. It is important to Horizons not only to offer activities that expand

students’ ideas of what’s possible, but also to deepen their understanding of local

industries and their surroundings.

Empowering Kent & Queen Anne's

Community Support & Resources

Partnering to uplift and strengthen families and communities in Kent and Queen Anne's.

Literacy Help

1

Hands on, small classroom support in reading. One School/One Book reading project, and partnership with Open Doors Partners in Education for one-on-one support.

Math Skills

2

Creative and engaging grade-level math lessons to prevent learning loss.

Water Safety & Sailing

3

Partnerships with the Rock Hall Yacht Club Sailing School and the Corsica River Yacht Club teach our students about water safety and to sail on the Chesapeake Bay.

High School Prep

4

Led by actress, Presilah Davis, and tailored specifically for 8th grade, the 5 “Playfully Polite” sessions prepare our students to transition into high school by emphasizing leadership, personal responsibility, and real-world social skills.

Horse Therapy

5

Students learn to care for and ride horses with the Kent Association of Riding Therapy at Worthmore Equestrian Center. Getting on a horse takes courage and the sense of accomplishment lasts a lifetime!

Finance Skills

6

Members of the community and local businesses are invited to the Innovation

Center at Washington College to participate in the “Game of LIFE.” Students are given real world scenarios and challenged to make responsible financial choices.

STEM Fun

7

Our certified teachers bring creativity to the program and get our students excited about STEM.

Chess & Strategy

8

Horizons students play and receive lessons in  chess, which instills focus and discipline, improves self-confidence and self-esteem, teaches planning and patience, builds unity and improves social interaction.

Swim & Safety

9

Swim instruction is integral to the Horizons program. It’s a life-saving, confidence-building skill. Some students arrive as

non-swimmers afraid of the water. We’ve found that when their teachers and peers join them in the pool, they build

trust and self-esteem – and those qualities spill over into the classroom.

Healthy Cooking

10

Horizons' 6th grade students learn about ancestral diets, foraging and fermenting vegetables at Modern Stone Age Kitchen. They spend four sessions in the kitchen that culminates with making their own pizzas from the ingredients they make themselves. They learn that cooking nutritious meals is easy, simple, inexpensive and can be made from readily available ingredients.

Character & Leadership

11

Character education is an essential component of the program to prepare our students for leadership roles in school and beyond. Character Counts volunteers lead weekly lessons that emphasize the importance of the six pillars of character.

Aviation & Flight

12

Students visit iFly in Baltimore and learn about speed, velocity, and acceleration, and and actually fly with a certified instructor.

Ecosystem Visits

13

Every year, our students visit the Lawrence Wetlands Preserve where they catch tadpoles and learn about pond life and the Eastern Shore ecosystem.

Arts & Culture

14

Students work with visiting artists from the Kent County Cultural Alliance

Celebrating Character

15

In honor of Horizons biggest champion, LT Goodall, three students are chosen for

their exemplary character and kindness throughout the 6 weeks. They ae rewarded with a limo ride and lunch at

the Kitchen with the site directors.

Learning Support

16

Horizons partners with Open Doors to provide targeted students with added support in reading. Students work

one-on-one with Open Doors’ Orten-Gillingham trained specialists.

Sports & Fitness

17

Horizons students attend Ravens

training at the Under Armour Performance Center in Owings Mills, MD.

Adventure Trips

18

Students travel across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to Annapolis for an experience of a lifetime.

County Fair

19

PreK - 1 grade visit the Kent County 4H

Fair where they interact with rabbits, goats, pigs and cows.
